Thank you for visiting this website about the Province of Colon
in the Republic of Panama. The Province, with a population of 200,000 residents, is located on the Atlantic coast of
Panama.
The Republic of Panama, with a total population of 2.8 million
people, is a small but vital country in Central America. The
Panama Canal, built and formerly owned by the US Government and
now owned by the Republic of Panama, runs through Panama and
provides a vital waterway link to the Atlantic and Pacific
oceans.
Colon, the principal city of Colon Province,
is located at the Atlantic entrance to the Canal. For over a
century the city of Colon had been a beautiful and colorful European
style metropolis and its people enjoyed a prosperous lifestyle.
However, over the last several decades, unemployment had reached
60% of the labor force in the Province, resulting in a severe
economic decline, causing an extreme hardship on the population.
